6 Things to Consider When Renting Directly from a Homeowner

Going away and staying in a house for a reasonable price has never been easier than it is today. Using the world wide web can put you in direct contact with the owners of houses that rent them out. What you are essentially doing is cutting out the middle man. By doing this you save on fees and commissions.

The price may be great, but there are definitely risks involved when going this route. To minimize these risks one must do their research. You may do all the research and still not be completely happy, but that is the chance you take. Is it worth it? I think so.

What are some ways to get make sure you are getting a place you can live with for the amount of time you will be renting it?

1) Look at all the photos of the property. If there are no photos, move on to your next choice. If the pictures that are there do not show you enough to be comfortable renting the place, ask for more photos. Ask for specific photos of what you want to see.

2) Use google earth. How can this help me you ask? Well, by using Google earth, you will get a view from the sky. This way you can tell if the place you are considering renting is surrounded by factories, is on a major highway or is in a location that is not desirable to your liking.

3) Make sure you have a signed contract. Make sure this contract states who is going to fix what if anything malfunctions or breaks. You do not want to rent from someone only to discover that you are responsible for the broken dishwasher that leaked all over the kitchen floor.

4) beware of the property description. It the description says the place is within walking distance to a certain location, be sure to find out just how far it is. Walking distance to one person may be 100 yards and to another person a mile and a half. Also ask where you have to walk to get there to. You may be trudging through a horse field or dodging cars on a interstate while walking.

5) Find out the true number of people the place sleeps. The place may say it sleeps 12. 4 of those people may be sleeping on the 15 year old sleeper sofa where your back can feel every spring under it.

6) Is the place rented at other times? If the place has no rentals other than yours, look out. No one else is willing to stay there, are you?a
