Electromagnetic Fields in Your New Home

I do home inspection for buyers in Central Ohio. Occasionally I will get a phone call regarding electromagnetic fields (EMF) in a home. This is a controversial topic. This is because there is not any clear and definitive studies regarding the effects of EMF on people. There is also not a consensus on the level of EMF that is considered safe or too much. Studies have varied on the threshold that was determined as over the limit. These factors have made definitive studies difficult.

With or without a defined “safe level” there are still people who have a sensitivity to EMF that is far more sensitive than most others. I personally can not feel them unless I am very close and the levels are really high. A few years ago I was contacted by a home owner who was concerned with EMF levels in his house. We scheduled a day and time to come out and do a survey of his house with a Gauss meter to read and map out the EMF levels in his house.

The home owner complained to pain, difficulty sleeping, swelling in his hands and feet. One of the first things he showed me was a bedroom that he had lined with aluminum foil in an attempt to shield himself. He also walked around pointing out areas in which he felt pain or discomfort. My first thought is that this may be a “less than stable” person.

After I pulled out the Gauss meter I detected that in every location he indicated discomfort there was high EMF readings. One such area was a specific spot on the dining room floor. I later discovered that directly under this area in the basement was a light fixture that was giving off high readings. I recommended that he contact an electrician to replace the light due to an apparent wiring issue.

This experience provided good evidence that some people are indeed sensitive to high EMF levels. Just as some people are allergic to pollen, some people are allergic to EMF’s. If concerned about the levels of EMF where you live or will be moving to then get it checked out.

This man was very sensitive to levels. Even when walking across his floor he could identify area of high readings. He claimed that areas with really high levels of EMF were painful. His hands were swollen and cracked as evidence. He also complained of difficulty sleeping. The high readings were confirmed with the Gauss meter in the areas he identified by feeling.

As we walked around the house with the meter and the computer mapping the readings we picked up high readings along the cold water service pipe. The pipe was used for grounding the electric panel. We also picked up high readings from some lighting fixtures that were not working correctly.

The home owner was very happy that his thoughts were confirmed and that the things he was feeling were real and not just in his head. His challenge now is to find an electrician to correct the wiring in his house.
