If this is just the occasional raising of voices or spot of home improvements it’s not unbearable and you can count yourself lucky that’s all you have to put up with. Even if you have completely decent neighbours you could still overhear arguments, what they’re building, the sound of their glasses being smashed or a restless infant. All these everyday noises become grating if you’re constantly disturbed by them. You feel like you’re sharing someone else’s life, or that your own life is being disrupted. Especially irksome is noise when you’re trying to sleep – this can affect the waking day and even affect your health.
So let’s assume that your neighbours badly served by architecture what might you do about things? It’s one thing to listen to their irksome brats playing soldiers but all they’re doing is having sex and waking you up!
The folks next door may be blissfully ignorant of the sleep you’re losing. Or they might have to listen to *your* snoring! If there’s an easy solution, for example for them not to kill their kids or to get a different alarm clock it’s worth just going round and talking it through. Be smiley and make sure they know they’re not to blame. After all, if you can hear them there’s every chance they can hear you too. So ask if there’s some way you can help to keep your own din down – have you ever used your washing machine late at night?
If you live in shared condos, talk to the person you rent from. Ask other habitees if they have experienced a problem too – you could get the housing sound tested to see if is compliant with regulations. Of course, some landlords are more sympathetic than others. If your landlord has soundproofed to regulatory standards, the responsibility rests with you and your own feelings about the irritation caused.
Sometimes fitting acoustic installation is the easiest solution. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but it is advisable to get an an acoustic expert to look at your property in the first instance. An expert will be able to tell you the best solution.
