Those of us who live in a temperate environment are used to constantly variable weather conditions and are quite accepting of those pesky rain showers as we know that we need the water to actually survive. Our homes are under constant attack from the elements and as we try and maintain a perfect indoor temperature it is not unusual to see moisture in walls due to this variation. This is a problem that we should try and do something about.
Dampness can enter your home in a number of different ways and this can make moisture in walls a difficult problem to solve. Try and find the cause first before you consider the various solutions available to you. Is rainwater leaking through roofs or through badly finished or sealed walls? It may be pooling around the outside of the house, while you should also check your door frames and windows.
Did you know that it is possible to add up to 15 gallons of water per day to the air inside your home just by living? Not only do we see moisture in walls but we also see it on the surface and on ceilings and due to the naturally occurring moisture caused by cooking, showering, doing laundry, etc. Indoor moisture is a fact of life.
Get used to the fact that moisture in walls can come from both the inside and the outside. Pay particular attention to connections around plumbing fixtures and look for leaks in your air conditioning duct work that will themselves attract a good deal of moisture.
If you live in a particularly damp area or are prone to significant summer storms, you may notice that water is drawn up from the surrounding subsoil into your house and this is one of the prime causes of water moisture in walls. You need to pay particular attention to this if your house sits near to a watershed or retention pond.
Don’t get too paranoid if you find that you have moisture in walls as a certain amount of this is only natural and necessary. The normal cycle of things will dictate that when wet weather gives way to the dry season a lot of this moisture will evaporate. Do make sure that you keep an eye on the moisture levels, however and take action if needed.
If you find that you need to do something about moisture in walls, simply get a hurricane sock and place it either around your window, door or in your basement. They are very simple and will prevent damage and that nasty mold accumulation. Up to a gallon of water can be absorbed at any one time through the polypropylene included within the very strong nylon outer material. The socks can be molded to fit any surface.
A hurricane sock can be used to alleviate your moisture in walls problem and they can be placed around washing machines, water heaters, cabinets, window frames, doors, basement walls and a variety of places where water may tend to accumulate or mold appear. It is much easier to use these items than to get a mop and bucket or to get involved with chemicals to treat those nasty mold stains.
